Season Summary

With a singles line-up of all underclassmen, we knew that this season would be a developmental year.  While development did remain our focus throughout, what a surprise it was to discover how much we could lean on those underclassmen!  Freshmen Aaron Witthohn finished a fantastic rookie campaign with a 12-3 record at 1st singles.  Sophomore Adam Schiller, splitting time at 2nd/3rd singles, finished with a 5-10 record but with some conditioning will be a force to be reckoned with next season.  Junior, M.J. O’Neal, who also split between 2nd/3rd singles, was our most improved player finishing with a record of 10-2.  We expect big things from these three next year and could boast the best singles trio in Northeast Ohio for ’09.

Our seniors, Mike Nedelman, J.J. Lossing, and Rafael Feliz met all expectations.  They provided leadership for their younger peers, kept things light, and ensured a fun, enjoyable atmosphere for the team.  Nedelman and Lossing were, perhaps, our best doubles team in the past five years at 1st doubles.   Feliz paired up with sophomore Alejandro Molina to make up one our most entertaining duos in recent history, while also contributing a great deal in key situations.

It is noteworthy to mention the outstanding job our Junior Varsity coach and players did this spring as well.  Coach Dan Riddell led the development team to a record of 6-1-1 and saw many of his players make great strides in their game. We will miss our seniors but look forward to a great group of returning players for the spring of ’09.  Led by our singles trio of Witthohn, O’Neal, and Schiller and bolstered by up and comers, Brian Shea ’11, Burd Lin ’10, and Lucas Liu ’09, the tennis team will surely be a force to be reckoned with next spring.

Tennis Update:
Vs. Riverside        W   4 - 1
*Great start for the team.  Freshmen, Aaron Witthohn and Senior, J.J. Lossing led the way, winning at first and third singles.  Our first doubles team of Junior, M.J. O'Neal and Sophomore, Brian Shea look promising as they won their first match and second doubles Seniors Mike Nedelman and G.W. Blum also won their first match.

Vs. St. J & P        RAINED OUT (To be re-scheduled)

Vs. NDCL             L    0-5
*Freshmen, Aaron Witthohn battled hard in a straight sets loss at first singles.  His opponant, a senior, state-qualifier, proved the better player on this day.  Second singles, sophomore, Adam Schiller and third singles senior, J.J. Lossing, both lost in straight sets.  Both first and second doubles also dropped straight sets matches to an experienced NDCL squad.

Vs.  Conneaut      L 2-3

*Despite a disappointing loss to local rival Conneaut H.S., there were bright spots for the Eagles.  Freshmen, Aaron Witthohn won an impressive first singles match against his senior opponent from Conneaut, improving his personal record to 2-1.  At second singles, sophomore, Adam Schiller won his first match of the year in straight sets, improving to 1-2 personally.  A loss at third singles meant that the pressure rested on our doubles teams.  Both first and second doubles went to three sets before we dropped both matches to Conneaut.  At first doubles, Junior, M.J. O'Neal and sophomore, Brian Shea, were a tie breaker away from winning and will surely remember the sting of losing this match when Conneaut arrives for the return match in a few weeks.

Vs. Lakeside High School                    LOSS  1  -  4
-Valliant efforts from Aaron Witthohn at first singles and Rafael Feliz/Alejandro Molina at second doubles proved
fruitless as the Eagles dropped the team match 1-4 to an experienced Lakeside squad.  Michael-John O'Neal was the only victor on the day, winning an impressive three-set match at third singles.

Vs. Edgewood High School             WIN   4  -  1
-The boys responded well from Monday's loss with a strong effort at local rival Edgewood High.  All three singles players were victorious on the day.  Aaron Witthohn dominated at first singles in straight sets 6-1, 6-0.  Adam Schiller won a three-setter at second singles 7-5, 3-6, 6-3.  Michael-John O'Neal won his fifth straight match at third singles by outsmarting his opponant 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.  The Eagles doubles teams also faired well on the day as second doubles teammates J.J. Lossing/Mike Nedelman won 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.  The win was important as it ended a recent skid the team had been on.

Vs. Lake Catholic High School            WIN     3  -  2
-The Eagles rode the momentum of Wednesday's victory to another impressive win at Lake Catholic, winning 3-2.  At first singles, freshmen Aaron Witthohn continued to shine, out-dueling his senior opponent in three sets, 6-7, 6-1, 6-3.  Michael-John O'Neal's winning streak is now six, after he won at third singles 6-2, 1-6, 6-1.  The second doubles team of J.J. Lossing/Mike Nedelman helped secure the victory winning in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.  The win brings the Eagles' record to 5-6.

Vs. Riverside High School
3 wins in a row brings us to .500 on the season as gives us a chance to reach our season goal, a winning record!!!  In a 5-0 sweep today over Riverside, all three singles players, Witthohn, O’Neal, and Schiller, continued to roll and won decisively.  Our doubles teams also played well in victories.  1st Doubles teammates Mike Nedelman and J.J. Lossing played their best match of the season while our 2nd doubles tandom of Rafael Feliz and Alejandro Molina out-dueled their opponents in three sets

Vs. Madison High School

What a finish!  Our win today over Madison High secures a winning record for the team this season.  As it turns out, we needed a complete team effort to seal the victory.  After 1st singles sensation Aaron Witthohn and 3rd singles Adam Schiller won in straight sets, the boys needed only one more win.  At 2nd singles, M.J. O’Neal dropped a close three-setter.  1st doubles duo Nedelman and Lossing lost a straight-set match much closer than anticipated taking on Madison’s top two players.  This left our 2nd doubles pairing of Feliz and Molina with the pressure squarely on their shoulders.  In the third set they buckled down and pushed their way to a big win!  It was a great way to finish a really fun season.
